To be creative, be prepared to screw up and take it on the chin

It's important that nobody gets mad at you for screwing up. We know screwups are an essential part of making something good. That’s why our goal is to screw up as fast as possible.Lee Unkrich, director of Toy Story 3, Wired magazine

Following on from my post about when is it the right time to show your work, I thought I would share this excellent quote from Lee Unkrich. Pixar clearly have a work ethic that doesn't penalise mistakes, and as stated by Unkrich, this plays a big part in their creativity and success. Only by overcoming the fear of screwing up can you truly allow yourself to innovate.

This is particularly true because unless you try that idea, you will never know how great it could be and if you fear ridicule for failure you will never try these ideas. This leads me back to my previous post. If you are going to put your work online and make it public, you might not find success, but do not let failure deter you. Be sure you are thick skinned enough to get back on your horse again and keep creating, because through this process we learn, refine and develop.
